How online degree examinations actually work

The examination system is the part of a programme people ask about least and are most affected by. It decides where you have to be, how the year is shaped, and how the degree is actually earned.

Remote proctored examinations

You sit the paper at home on your own computer, monitored through your webcam and screen by software, a live invigilator, or a recording reviewed afterwards. Identity is verified at the start, and the room is usually checked by camera.

What this requires in practice: a working camera and microphone, a stable connection, a quiet room where nobody will walk in, and a clear desk. The conditions are stricter than people expect and are enforced, so it is worth doing the practice session that most universities offer rather than discovering the requirements on the day.

Ask in advance what happens if the connection drops mid-paper. Every university has a procedure; knowing it removes most of the anxiety.

Centre-based examinations

A written paper at an allocated centre on a fixed date. Straightforward and familiar, and entirely dependent on the centre being reachable. Confirm the location before enrolling, and ask whether the centre can be changed between semesters if you move or are posted elsewhere.

Continuous assessment

Assignments, quizzes and submissions across the semester that carry a share of the final mark. This spreads the work and reduces the weight of any single paper, which suits most working people.

The risk is different: a month lost to work or illness costs marks that cannot be recovered at the end. Continuous assessment rewards steadiness and punishes disappearing.

Projects and capstones

Common at postgraduate level, and usually the most useful component of the degree because you choose the subject. Use a problem from your own work. It is faster to write, more credible, and occasionally useful to your employer.

Preparing sensibly

For written and proctored papers, practise answering past questions under time rather than re-reading material. Re-reading feels productive and is the weakest use of study hours.

For continuous assessment, start each task the week it is set. Twenty minutes early is worth two hours late.

Before enrolling

Ask how you will be assessed, where, what share each component carries, and what the policy is on a missed or deferred paper. Those answers tell you whether the programme fits your year.
