Stopping a degree halfway is common, and it is rarely the end of the road. Five realistic routes to finishing, from clearing old papers to transferring credits, and how to choose between them.

If you discontinued a degree in Kerala, there are five realistic ways to complete it: clear the pending papers at your original university, rejoin that university if its rules still allow it, transfer your passed credits to another recognized university, start a fresh distance or online degree, or, if you studied under the newer four-year structure, collect the exit credential you have already earned. Which one fits depends on how long ago you stopped, how much you passed, and why you want the degree now.

Here is each route, with its honest strengths and limits.

Before choosing a route, collect three facts. Which university and which year you were admitted in. Which semesters you attended and which papers you passed. And whether your old university considers you still within the maximum period allowed to finish, often called the span or validity period.

Most people do not know the third one, and it decides the first two routes. Your old college office or the university's examination wing can tell you. Ask in writing if you can, and keep the reply.

Way 1: Clear the pending papers at your old university

This is the right route if you attended every semester and only have some papers left, usually supplementary or improvement examinations you never sat or never passed.

  • It keeps your degree with the university you started at, which some people prefer for sentimental or practical reasons.

  • You only sit the papers you owe, so the cost is usually limited to examination fees.

  • It depends entirely on your old university still allowing you to register for those examinations. Once the span period is over, many universities close this door or require special permission.

If you are in this position, read our piece on finishing a degree with supplementary papers before deciding.

Way 2: Rejoin your original university

Some Kerala universities allow a student who dropped out to be readmitted, usually into the semester they left, provided a seat is available and the request falls within the university's time limits. Rules differ between universities and between colleges, and they change.

This route suits someone who stopped recently, lives near the college and can attend regular classes. For a working adult with a family, a return to daytime classes is often not practical, which is why most of the people we meet look at the remaining three routes.

Way 3: Transfer your passed credits to another university

If you passed a meaningful part of the degree but your old university cannot take you back, credit transfer is often the most efficient route. A receiving university matches your passed papers against its own programme and admits you at a later stage, so you complete only what remains.

  • It works best when the new programme is in the same subject, for example B.Com to B.Com.

  • Failed papers do not transfer, only passed ones do.

  • The receiving university decides what it accepts, so nobody can promise a result before your marksheets are assessed.

Our complete guide to degree credit transfer in Kerala covers the documents and steps, and the credit transfer page explains how we handle it.

Way 4: Start a fresh distance or online degree

Sometimes starting again is the honest answer. That is the case if you studied only a semester or two, if your old papers are in a subject you no longer want, or if your marksheets cannot be traced.

A fresh distance or online degree from a UGC-recognized university, in a programme with DEB entitlement for your admission year, is treated as equivalent to a regular degree for most purposes under the UGC's 2020 regulations. It lets you choose a subject that fits the work you do now. A B.Com or BBA for someone in accounts or sales, a BCA for someone who has drifted into IT support, a BA for someone aiming at general PSC examinations.

The trade-off is time. A bachelor's degree is three years from the start, so this route is slower than a transfer if you had real credits to bring.

Way 5: Collect the exit credential you have already earned

Under the National Education Policy, universities following the four-year undergraduate structure can award a certificate after the first year and a diploma after the second year to a student who exits. Kerala's universities moved to the four-year structure from 2024.

This only applies if you were admitted under that structure and your university's regulations provide for it. For most people who discontinued an older three-year degree, it does not apply. If it does apply to you, the credential is worth claiming, and the credits behind it can also be stored in your Academic Bank of Credits account for later use. Our guide to the ABC ID explains how that works.

Choosing between them

A simple way to decide:

  • You attended every semester and owe a few papers, and you are still within the span period: Way 1.

  • You stopped recently and can attend classes: Way 2.

  • You passed a year or more of papers and want to finish while working: Way 3.

  • You passed little, changed direction, or lost your records: Way 4.

  • You were in the four-year structure and left after a full year or two: ask about Way 5, then consider Way 3 for the rest.

Whichever route you take, check one thing before paying. If you want the degree for a particular Kerala PSC post, read that post's notification. Some posts require a qualification through a regular course of study, and the Kerala High Court confirmed in January 2026 that a distance degree does not satisfy that wording. Our article on whether a distance degree is valid for government jobs explains it in full.

The mistakes that cost people the most time

  • Paying a provider before seeing the university name, the programme and its DEB entitlement for the year. If you cannot verify it, do not pay.

  • Assuming that because a semester was attended, it was passed. Only passed papers count, so look at the marksheet, not your memory.

  • Leaving the duplicate marksheet request until the end. Old universities can take weeks to respond, and the whole plan waits on that paper.

  • Choosing a subject only because it transfers the most credits. If the degree does not suit the job you want, a slightly longer route in the right subject is the better trade.

  • Enrolling for a specific PSC post without reading its notification first.

Practical next steps

  • Ask your old college or university for your marksheets, or duplicates, and your span period status.

  • Write down the reason you want the degree and any deadline, such as a promotion cycle or a job application.

  • Bring the papers to us. We assess which of the five routes is open to you, including the ones that do not involve us, such as clearing papers at your old university.

  • If a new programme makes sense, you see the university, the programme, its DEB entitlement and the full fee in writing before paying. Monthly instalments without interest are available.
