The rules that allow two simultaneous degrees, the combinations that are permitted, and whether the workload is realistic.
For most of the history of Indian higher education, holding two degrees at the same time was not permitted. That position has changed, and it opens a genuine option for people in a hurry. It also gets misrepresented, so it is worth setting out carefully.
What is permitted
UGC guidelines allow a student to pursue two academic programmes simultaneously, subject to conditions set by the institutions involved. The common permitted shapes are one programme in physical mode alongside one in open and distance or online mode, or two programmes both in distance or online mode.
Two full-time physical programmes at the same time remain outside what is permitted, for the obvious reason that the attendance requirements cannot both be met.
The conditions that matter
Both universities must be recognized, and where a programme is in distance or online mode, that programme must be entitled for that mode. The timetables and examination schedules must not clash. And both institutions must be willing, which is the condition most people forget to check.
Ask each university directly whether it permits simultaneous enrolment, and get the answer in writing before you pay either fee. Institutional policy varies, and an institution is entitled to be stricter than the general guideline.
Where it genuinely helps
Someone doing a full-time campus degree who adds a distance B.Com or BBA to broaden their eligibility. Someone completing a PG degree while adding a diploma or second PG in a complementary field. Someone whose employer requires one qualification while their career plan requires another.
Where it does not
If you are already working full-time, two simultaneous programmes means sixteen to twenty hours a week of study on top of the job, sustained for two or three years. We talk most working professionals out of this. Finishing one degree well is worth more than half-finishing two, and a failed semester in both programmes is a real outcome, not a hypothetical one.
Practical planning
Check the examination calendars of both programmes against each other before enrolling, not after.
Stagger the start dates by one semester where possible, so the heavy weeks do not coincide.
Register both against your Academic Bank of Credits identifier so the credits are tracked cleanly.
Keep written confirmation from both universities that simultaneous enrolment is permitted.
If you are considering this, tell us both programmes and we will check the entitlements, the calendars and the institutional policies, and give you an honest view of whether the combination is manageable. Sometimes the useful answer is that it is not.
