How the Plymouth Marjon online MBA works for students in Kerala, what the UK degree is good for, and where Indian equivalence rules matter before you enrol.
Yes, you can earn a UK MBA from Plymouth Marjon University while living and working in Kerala. The programme is studied online over roughly 12 to 18 months, includes a dissertation, and has monthly intakes. It is a UK degree, not an Indian one, and that is the most important thing to understand before enrolling: it is well suited to private-sector and international careers, but for Indian government jobs and some Indian admissions it would need formal equivalence, which is not automatic.
Who Plymouth Marjon University is
Plymouth Marjon University is a UK university based in Plymouth, in the south-west of England. Its roots go back to St John's College, London, founded in 1840, and it gained full university status in 2013. It is a small university with a long teaching history.
That history matters for one practical reason. A degree from a long-established UK university with degree-awarding powers is a different thing from a certificate issued by a private training company using a university's name. Whatever you enrol in, the final award should be issued by Plymouth Marjon University itself.
How the online MBA is structured
Duration. Most students complete in 12 to 18 months, depending on how quickly they move through the modules and the dissertation.
Fully online study. Teaching material, assignments and supervision are delivered online, so there is no travel to the UK.
A dissertation. The programme ends with an independent research project, usually on a real business problem. For working students this is often the most useful part, because it can be built around your own job or industry.
Monthly intakes. You do not have to wait for a single annual start date.
Assessment through assignments and the dissertation. Ask for the current assessment pattern in writing, since it may differ from the end-of-semester examinations common in Indian distance programmes.
Module details and credit structure can change from year to year, so ask for the current programme specification in writing before you enrol. We give you that, along with the full fee, before any payment is taken.
The equivalence question, explained plainly
This is where people get caught out, so it is worth going slowly.
An Indian employer in the private sector, a multinational or a Gulf company will usually look at a UK MBA on its merits: the university, the transcript and your experience. No Indian approval is needed for that.
Indian government recruitment is different. For a central or state government post that asks for an MBA or a postgraduate degree, a foreign qualification usually has to be recognized as equivalent to an Indian one. For many years that equivalence came from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). In April 2025 the UGC notified its own regulations on recognizing qualifications from foreign institutions, and equivalence for foreign degrees has since been handled by the UGC.
Three honest points follow:
Equivalence is not automatic. It is decided case by case, on the institution, the entry requirement, the duration and how the programme was delivered.
Online and short-duration programmes have historically been harder. AIU did not generally grant equivalence to foreign degrees taken online, or to master's degrees shorter than the Indian norm. The newer UGC rules have changed the framework, but you should not assume a 12 to 18 month online MBA will be granted equivalence.
Franchised qualifications are excluded. Qualifications delivered through franchise arrangements that do not comply with Indian rules are not eligible.
If an Indian government post is your goal, an Indian MBA with a valid DEB entitlement is the safer route. Our article on whether a distance degree is valid for government jobs explains how those work.
Who this MBA suits
Private-sector managers and supervisors in Kerala who want a postgraduate management qualification for promotion.
People working in, or planning to move to, the Gulf, the UK or elsewhere abroad, where a UK university name is familiar. For Gulf use, ask about attestation requirements in advance.
Experienced professionals who want a shorter route than a two-year Indian MBA and are comfortable with written, research-based assessment.
Business owners who want structured management training and a recognized award at the end of it.
It suits less well if you need the degree mainly for Kerala PSC, central government recruitment, or admission to an Indian PhD or teaching post. Compare it honestly with an Indian online MBA; our guide to online versus regular MBA sets out the trade-offs.
What studying it is like, week to week
A UK online MBA feels different from an Indian distance programme, and it helps to know that before you start.
Reading and writing carry the weight. Most of the work is reading case material and academic sources, then writing assignments that apply them to real situations. Good written English matters more than memory.
Referencing is expected. UK universities expect you to cite your sources properly and take plagiarism seriously. If you have not written in this style before, budget time in the first module to learn it.
Deadlines are firm. Extensions are usually possible when asked for in advance with a reason, not after the date has passed.
The dissertation needs a topic early. Students who pick a question from their own workplace in the first few months find the final stage far easier than those who start from nothing.
For someone working full time, this usually means a steady few hours most weeks rather than intense revision before examinations. Our guide to studying while working full time has practical advice on protecting those hours.
Eligibility and the admission process
Postgraduate admission generally expects a recognized bachelor's degree. The university may also look at work experience and, for some applicants, evidence of English language ability. The exact entry requirements are set by the university and can change, so we confirm them for your profile before you apply.
The usual sequence is:
An initial conversation about your degree, your work and what you want the MBA for.
A check of your documents against the current entry requirements.
A written summary of the programme, the awarding university, the intake and the full fee.
Application, offer and enrolment, followed by access to the online learning platform.
What about fees
We do not publish fee figures in articles, because they depend on the intake and change over time. The counsellor gives you the full fee breakdown in writing, including anything charged separately, such as graduation or document fees. Monthly instalment plans with no interest are available. Read the breakdown line by line and ask about anything that is unclear before you sign.
Practical next steps
Write down what the MBA is for. If the honest answer includes an Indian government job, discuss equivalence before anything else.
Ask for the programme specification, the awarding body named on the certificate, and the full fee, all in writing.
Check the university's details on its official website, marjon.ac.uk, rather than relying on brochures.
Read the Marjon University page on our site and compare it with the Indian MBA options we place students into.
