Bharathidasan University in Tiruchirappalli runs distance and online programmes through its Centre for Distance and Online Education. What it offers, how recognition works, and how admission runs for Kerala students.
Bharathidasan University offers distance and online degrees through its Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), which the university's own site describes as recognized by the UGC Distance Education Bureau for both open and distance learning (ODL) and online programmes. The range covers BA, B.Com, BBA, BCA and B.Sc at undergraduate level, and MA, M.Com, M.Sc, MBA and MCA at postgraduate level. Admission runs in sessions through the year, and Kerala students can apply without moving to Tamil Nadu.
Here is what you should know before you choose it.
The university in brief
Bharathidasan University is a state university in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, established in 1982 and named after the Tamil poet Bharathidasan. It is recognized by the UGC under Sections 2(f) and 12(B), and it holds an A+ grade from NAAC in its third cycle of accreditation. The CDOE's own page also notes the university's place in the NIRF 2025 ranking of Indian universities. Our explainer on NAAC grades and NIRF rankings covers what those labels do and do not tell you.
The distance education centre itself dates back to 1992, which means the university has been running distance programmes for more than three decades. For a student, that history matters mainly because it shows the university has settled systems for study material, examinations and results.
Do not confuse it with Bharathiar University
This mistake is common enough to deserve its own section. Bharathidasan University is in Tiruchirappalli. Bharathiar University is a different state university, in Coimbatore, with its own distance and online centre and its own website. The names are close, and search results often mix them up.
Bharathidasan University's distance and online education pages sit under its own domain, bdu.ac.in. If a page you are reading is on another domain, check which university it belongs to before you rely on anything it says.
What the CDOE offers
According to the CDOE's published list of UGC-DEB approved programmes for the academic year 2026 to 2027, the ODL range includes:
Undergraduate (three years, semester pattern): BA in Economics, English, History, Political Science, Public Administration and Tamil; BBA; BCA; B.Com and B.Com (Bank Management); and B.Sc in subjects including Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Geography.
Postgraduate (two years, semester pattern): MA in Economics, English, History, Tamil and Human Resource Management; M.Com; M.Sc in several subjects; MBA; and MCA.
A one-year Master of Library and Information Science.
The university also lists a separate set of online degree programmes. The online range is narrower than the ODL range, so check which mode a programme is offered in before you decide. Our guide to online and distance modes explains the practical difference.
Science subjects with laboratory work have their own arrangements for practicals. If you are considering a B.Sc in a laboratory subject, ask how and where practicals are conducted before you enrol, since that affects travel.
Recognition: what to check for your year
The university being recognized is the first condition, not the only one. For your degree to be treated as equivalent to a regular degree under the UGC's 2020 regulations, the specific programme must also have DEB entitlement for the academic session in which you are admitted.
The CDOE publishes its DEB approvals and applications on its own site, and the DEB publishes entitlement lists on its portal. Check the programme name, the mode and the session. Our step-by-step guide on how to verify UGC-DEB approval shows where each record sits.
For Kerala PSC posts, read the notification for the post you want. Some posts require a qualification through a regular course of study, and the Kerala High Court confirmed in January 2026 that a distance degree does not satisfy that wording. For posts that ask simply for a degree, a recognized distance degree is generally accepted.
Admission sessions and eligibility
The CDOE runs more than one admission session in a year. Its site refers to an academic year session and a calendar year session, and it announces last dates for each through admission notifications. For the academic year 2026 session, the notification on the CDOE site gave a last date in October 2026.
Because dates change from year to year, we do not list them here. When you contact us, we tell you which session is open and its deadline, taken from the university's current notification.
Why Kerala students choose it
People in Kerala usually come to Bharathidasan for three reasons. The first is breadth. Few universities offer as many BA and B.Sc subjects in distance mode, so someone who wants a BA in Political Science or Public Administration for a career in administration, or a B.Sc in Mathematics, has a real choice.
The second is the university itself. It is a state university with a long-established distance centre, which reassures employers and families who have never heard of a newer private university.
The third is study support. The CDOE works through Learner Support Centres and personal contact programmes, which give students some structured contact alongside self-study. Whether a support centre or contact class is accessible from Kerala for your programme is something to ask before enrolling, not assume.
It is not the right choice for everyone. If your goal is a specific Kerala PSC post that requires regular study, no distance programme will meet it. If you need an MSW, it does not appear in the CDOE's current ODL list, so another university may suit you better.
Undergraduate: a pass in the 12th from a recognized board.
Postgraduate: a bachelor's degree from a recognized university.
Some programmes have subject requirements, for example an MA in a subject may expect that subject at undergraduate level, and the MCA has different arrangements for students with and without a computer science background. The university's notification for your session is the final word.
How fees are structured
The CDOE publishes its programme fees on its site, and they differ by programme, by whether you studied the 12th in Tamil Nadu or another state, and by where you completed your undergraduate degree. On top of tuition there are examination fees each semester, and certificate charges at the end.
When we place a student, the counsellor sets out the total in writing before any payment is made. Monthly instalments are available with no interest and no processing fee.
How admission works through us
You bring your certificates to our Thrissur or Malappuram centre, or send copies.
We confirm eligibility and check the programme's DEB entitlement for the session you will join.
You see the university, the programme, the entitlement and the full fee in writing before paying.
We complete the application with you. Once documents are complete, the enrolment number is usually issued within about 48 hours.
After enrolment, you receive study material and access to the university's portals, and we keep you informed about assignment and examination dates.
If you studied part of a degree elsewhere, ask whether credit transfer applies. Bharathidasan's courses are listed on our university page.

If Bharathidasan looks like the right fit, talk to a counsellor at our Thrissur or Malappuram centre and we will check the current session for you.
