The specific claims and arrangements that indicate a degree will not hold up, and what to verify instead.
Most people who lose money in this field are not careless. They are busy, they are dealing with someone confident and helpful, and the problems are not obvious unless you know what they look like. Here is what they look like.
Claims that should end the conversation
A degree dated to a year you did not study. This is not a shortcut, it is a fabricated document, and using it is a serious matter for your employment.
A bachelor's degree in one year, or any programme materially shorter than its standard duration. Duration is set by regulation. It is not a competitive feature.
A guarantee that you will pass, or that no examination is required.
"Approval is in process" for the session you are being admitted to. An entitlement either exists for that session or it does not.
Pressure to pay today for a discount that expires tonight. Legitimate admissions have published fees and published dates.
Arrangements that deserve a closer look
A study centre or franchise office that collects fees in its own name, with no receipt from the university. Ask whether the fee goes to the university directly, and if it does not, ask why.
No enrolment number weeks after payment. This is the clearest early signal. A genuine admission produces an enrolment number issued by the university, visible on the university's own portal, in your name.
A website whose domain is close to but not the same as the university's official one. Check the address against the UGC's record rather than the brochure or a search result.
All communication through a personal phone number and no official university email in the chain.
The verification that answers all of it
Three checks, in order. Is the institution listed by the UGC as a university. Is it entitled by the Distance Education Bureau for this programme, in this mode, for this session. Does the programme appear on the university's own official website.
If all three hold, most of the risk is gone. If any one fails, nothing else compensates for it.
If you have already paid
Ask in writing for the enrolment number and the university receipt. Keep every message. If neither arrives, stop paying further instalments and raise it with the university directly, using the contact details from its official website rather than the ones you were given.
We will check a programme you found yourself, whether or not we have any involvement in it. It costs you nothing and it takes us about a day, which is a good trade against a fee you cannot recover.
