PRIST is a UGC-listed deemed-to-be university in Thanjavur. Whether a particular PRIST online or distance degree is valid depends on the programme and the year you join. How to check, plainly explained.
A PRIST online or distance degree can be valid, but not automatically. PRIST is a deemed-to-be university recognized under Section 3 of the UGC Act, which settles the first question. The second question, whether the specific programme you join was entitled by the UGC Distance Education Bureau for online or distance mode in the year you join, has to be checked programme by programme and year by year. If both hold, the degree is treated as equivalent to a regular degree under the UGC's 2020 regulations, subject to the wording of any job notification you apply to.
That is a less tidy answer than most people want, so here is how to check it properly.
What PRIST is
PRIST stands for Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology. Its main campus is at Vallam, near Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. It was declared a deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act in 2008, and it appears in the UGC's list of deemed-to-be universities.
You will see it called PRIST University, PRIST Deemed University and PRIST Deemed to be University. They are the same institution. The UGC has asked deemed universities to use the "deemed to be university" form in their names, which is why the longer version appears on official documents.
Why deemed universities need a closer look
Deemed universities have a particular history with distance education. In 2017 the Supreme Court held that deemed universities could not run distance programmes without the required regulatory approvals, and degrees from some unapproved programmes were affected. The regulations that followed, now the UGC's 2020 regulations on open, distance and online learning, set out exactly which institutions may offer which programmes in which mode.
The practical lesson is simple. With any deemed university, PRIST included, you check the programme's entitlement for your admission year rather than relying on the university's general status. Our article on red flags before enrolling in an online degree covers the warning signs that apply to any provider.
How to check a PRIST programme yourself
Confirm PRIST in the UGC's list of deemed-to-be universities. This takes a minute.
Go to the DEB portal and find the list of programmes recognized or entitled for the academic session in which you will be admitted. Look for PRIST, the exact programme name and the mode, online or ODL.
Match all three: university, programme and session. An entitlement for a different year, or for a different programme, does not cover you.
For MBA and MCA, ask what additional approval applies. Regulations treat management and computer applications programmes differently, and for deemed universities a further regulator is involved. Ask to see the document rather than accepting a general assurance.
Check that the programme appears on PRIST's own website, at prist.ac.in.
Our step-by-step guide to UGC-DEB verification walks through each screen.
We do this check for every programme before we recommend it. When we offer you a PRIST programme, we show you its entitlement for your session in writing. If we cannot show it, we will not ask you to enrol.
Online and distance are not the same thing
People often use "online" and "distance" interchangeably, but the UGC treats them as two separate modes. Open and distance learning relies mainly on printed or digital study material and in-person examinations at designated centres. Online learning is delivered through a learning platform, with assessment that may include proctored online examinations. A university can be entitled for one mode and not the other, and for some programmes and not others.
So when you check PRIST, or any university, check the mode as well as the programme name. Our guide to online and distance modes explains the differences in day-to-day study.
What about NAAC
You may see older material describing a NAAC grade for PRIST. NAAC accreditation runs for a fixed period and has to be renewed. We do not quote a current grade for PRIST, and you should check NAAC's own records for its present status rather than relying on a brochure or a third-party website. NAAC accreditation is also separate from DEB entitlement. A strong grade does not replace the entitlement check, and the entitlement is what decides whether a distance or online degree is recognized.
Is it valid for government jobs and PSC
For most posts where the requirement is simply a degree, a recognized online or distance degree, with DEB entitlement for your year, is treated as equivalent to a regular degree. The exception matters in Kerala. Where a post's Special Rules or notification require a qualification through a regular course of study, a distance or online degree does not qualify. The Kerala High Court applied that rule in January 2026 in a case involving the post of Librarian Grade IV. Read the notification for the post you want before you choose a programme. Our article on distance degrees and government jobs explains this in detail.
For jobs abroad, especially in the Gulf, check whether the employer or the country's education ministry assesses online and distance degrees separately. Some do, and it is better to know before you enrol.
Courses, eligibility and admission
The programmes we place students into span B.Com, BBA, BCA, BA and B.Sc at undergraduate level, and MBA, MCA, M.Com and MSW at postgraduate level, across our partner universities. Which of these is open at PRIST depends on the session you join, because programmes and entitlements change from year to year. Before you decide, we tell you which programmes are available at PRIST for the coming session and show the entitlement for the one you choose. More detail is on our PRIST university page.
Undergraduate: a pass in the 12th from a recognized board.
Postgraduate: a bachelor's degree from a recognized university.
The process through us is straightforward. You bring or send your certificates, we confirm eligibility and check the programme's entitlement for your session, and you see the university, the programme, the entitlement and the full fee in writing. Only then do you pay. Once documents are complete, the enrolment number is usually issued within about 48 hours.
How fees are structured
Fees are made up of tuition, registration, examination fees and certificate charges, with attestation on top if you will use the degree abroad. They differ by programme and year, so we do not quote figures here. Your counsellor gives you the complete breakdown in writing before payment. Monthly instalments are available with no interest and no processing fee.
Before you decide
Write down why you want the degree, and if it is for a particular post, find its notification.
Ask for the programme's DEB entitlement for your session, and verify it on the DEB portal yourself.
Keep a copy of every document you receive, from the admission letter to each semester's marksheet, in one folder.
Compare PRIST with the other universities we work with. For some goals another university will suit you better, and we will say so.
